Read: Philippians 3:10-14

Philippians 3:10-14

New International Version (NIV)

10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Consider: I know that not all of us are sports fans. But allow me, in the tradition of the Apostle Paul, to use an athletic analogy. In American football, the offensive leader on the field is the quarterback. He must be skilled in a variety of ways. He must have a keen understanding of the strategies of his opponents. He must be physically strong, mentally tough and emotionally under control. Commentators, coaches and players can list you a variety attributes that a great quarterback must possess. And among those important characteristics is the ability to forget. That’s right. A good quarterback learns how to forget.

Because of the importance of his role, when a quarterback makes a mistake, it is often a game-changing mistake. When he throws an interception that is returned by the defense for a touchdown, the air goes out of the crowd. His teammates are demoralized. He has hurt his cause. But after that happens, he must go back out on the field and try again. He must start anew. He must forget the magnitude of his last failure. When people judge a quarterback, they judge him by how he plays immediately after a game-changing mistake.

To return to the field after a self-induced disaster, takes character. And that is precisely what Paul calls us to do as he shares his journey…

“One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (3:13-14)

I can’t stretch toward what is ahead—I can’t pursue the goal—until I make the choice to forget. I must choose to leave the past behind me.

If anyone is positioned to do this, it is the Christian, because the Christian believes in forgiveness. The Christ-follower believes in redemption. We believe in the God of the second chance (and the third, and the fourth, and the…). We must resist the pull to wallow in self-pity. We must reject the temptation to demean ourselves over the sins of our past. As Paul wrote in one of his other letters, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Do we dare to believe that?

It takes that belief to liberate us from the past so that we can proceed to the goal.

Pray: “Lord, thank you for forgiveness. Help me to believe in your forgiveness and help me to live as one who has been forgiven. Empower me to forget what is behind—to forgive myself—so that I can ‘press on toward the goal.’”

“A delay is not a denial from God”.    RICK WARREN

  John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 143:7-8

Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

Habakkuk 2:3 (LB)

These things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Romans 8:37

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Titus 1:2

This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God–who does not lie–promised them before the world began.

Andrew Cripps – (Very Emotional) Depression & Anxiety Story

How I overcame depression & anxiety with Jesus

Taking Control of Our Thoughts– Dr. Charles Stanley

When All Hope Is Gone – Dr. Charles Stanley

Trust in the Deliverer is critical when in amidst of adversity war zones. If you don’t trust Him, you will probably feel unsafe even when things are benign, because fear would be expecting and anticipating pain all the time. Developing intimacy in our relationship with God through communication and studying of His Word is critical for success; for once you get to know God more and more, you tend to trust Him more. Then promises like Romans 8:37 (“we are more conquerors through Christ” ) can become more compelling to believe during dark times

For example, as a child, I read and read and heard sermons about grace, but I didn’t have a heartfelt understanding of what it meant. My abusive “fathers” tainted what it truly meant to be loved by God. Most of my life, I viewed my Heavenly Father like my stepdad. It took a while, but after countless experiences of spending time with God – through daily talk; surrender; on my knees; reading the Word; hearing sermons; listening and talking to Christian therapists, friends, and pastors – I am glad to say today I find real love and peace with God. As a result, I think more positively, am calmer, happier, and accept myself, more unconditionally.

Being closer to God has a definite positive effect on our anxiety and depression. It stabilizes and gives us hope, peace, love, acceptance, and forgiveness, to name a few. When we realize we are His and that He truly cares for us, it should reinforce the fact that “God will never make us endure something that isn’t for our own good”, and that “He will never leave nor forsake us through the trial”. That is because we are His beloved child (if you are a believer). Like spending time with a spouse, we gradually learn those features the lengthier we are with the person. That is what is happening to me.
